18 Jul Amavida, Santa Rosa Beach (USA)
Amavida Organic Coffee and Tea was founded in 2004 by Dan and his wife Sally, in the small beach town of Santa Rosa, on the beautiful Emerald Coast in northern Florida. Amavida has 3 local coffee bars on the Emerald Coast, and 1 coffee roaster.
Amavida strives to conduct business with a strong ethical foundation and a sense of fairness. It purchases its coffees from all over the world through the coop Coop Coffees. Farmers are guaranteed to receive a fair price for their product. In exchange for a fair price, these farmers practice high quality, eco-friendly farming that helps protect the environment.
In collaboration with NGO On the Ground, Amavida participates in 2 community projects: a water management project in Mexico, and a gender equality project in Congo.
Fulltime status at Amavida is achieved by working 28 hours, entitling employees to benefits. Employees are also supported to do 20 hours a year on community work in the area. Baristas at Amavida vote their shift leaders.
Amavida is working towards open book management and making financial information available to employees. Amavida balances males and females in leadership positions.
Apart from running Amavida, Dan teaches classes on social entrepreneurship.
