Job opportunities

Carlos is a civil engineer from Valencia, Spain. I met Carlos over breakfast in my hotel in Los Andes, Chile. Los Andes is a rather wealthy mining city, right next to the mountain pass that connects Chile with the city of Mendoza in Argentina.

The construction company he worked for in Spain went broke recently, leaving Carlos without a job. “All roads in Spain are ready – there are roads all over the country, connecting even the smallest cities, that nobody actually uses”.

So Carlos decided to come to Chile, to look for a job here. Four weeks ago he found a job at the administrative department of a local mining company and today he is being picked up to go to the mining site for training purposes.

Carlos is 45 and has a wife and daughter in Spain, with whom he connects through Skype every day. He expects to stay in Chile for quite some time.

The days that Latinos came to Europe to find a job seem to be over. It’s the other way around now.
