22 May Maria Mulata, Bogotá (COL)
Maria Mulata is the stage name of Diana, a singer born in San Gil, but currently living in Bogotá. Moreover, Maria Mulata is Diana’s project of releasing traditional Colombian music and rhythms, such as Bullerengue, Gaita, Tambora, Curulao, and Bambuco.
Ever since she was a small girl, Diana has been singing. About 15 years ago, she started investigating traditional music from all regions of the culturally highly diverse country of Colombia. Through frequent concerts and events in the countryside, she remains in close contact with her main source of inspiration until today.
Next to these events in her homeland Colombia, Maria Mulata has toured abroad, most notably in the US. In 2013, Maria Mulata was nominated for the Latin Grammy Awards.
Diana and I spoke right before one of Diana’s shows in Casa 9-69, a culture and arts centre in Bogotá, during the Womoon festival: a festival that celebrates the woman and her creativity in music, (visual) arts, design, dance, and entrepreneurship.
Maria Mulata is on Facebook, and Spotify.
