06 Aug Union Kitchen, Washington DC (USA)
Jonas and Cullen started Union Kitchen, a food incubator, in December 2012 in a commercial kitchen near Union Station in Washington, DC. Its mission is to make local products scalable by providing a low-cost, low-risk, full-service kitchen for local businesses to establish their operations, streamline their distribution, and drive growth at every stage of the entrepreneurial process.
Different from the standard pay-per-hour rental structure for shared commercial kitchen space, Union Kitchen offers monthly memberships. Memberships include access to the fully equipped kitchen, marketing and consulting services, in-house distribution, catering, and storage space.
To provide a top quality, fully licensed kitchen, Union Kitchen employs Kitchen Stewards who run ongoing health and safety checks. Many stewards join Union Kitchen from leading civil justice organisations, including DC Central Kitchen and Project Empowerment.
To drive sales to member businesses, Union Kitchen distributes member products to retail outlets throughout the region, including Giant, and Whole Foods. A neighbourhood corner store, Union Kitchen Grocery, offers a mix of everyday products alongside member products, and is located just blocks away from Union Kitchen:NoMa, in the historic Capitol Hill neighbourhood.
In just three years, the Union Kitchen team grew from its two co-founders to 40 employees. In addition to its current 7,300 square foot kitchen facility, Union Kitchen’s new 16,000 square foot flagship location is due to open shortly.
